Product Overview

Stainless Steel Ball Valve: Cast and Wrought Execution for Corrosive and Hygienic Service

Stainless steel ball valves deliver corrosion-resistant shut-off for pipelines where iron contamination, chloride attack or hygienic requirements rule out ductile iron or carbon steel. The body consists of austenitic stainless steel — either investment cast (1.4408 / CF8M) or wrought (1.4404 / 316L and 1.4401 / 316). Both variants close with a quarter turn from 0° to 90° and handle media temperatures from −40 °C to +200 °C.

Fergo supplies stainless steel ball valves in ten series from stock. The cast grade 1.4408 covers the widest nominal size range — DN8 to DN300 at PN10 to PN100 — and serves chemical processing, food and beverage, seawater and steam condensate systems. The wrought grade 1.4404 offers lower carbon content (≤ 0.030 %) and therefore higher resistance against intergranular corrosion after welding. For systems requiring duplex steel (1.4462 / 1.4470), Fergo provides a special execution.

Every series accepts a pneumatic or electric actuator to form an automated shut-off unit. DVGW drinking water and DVGW gas approvals, TA-Luft conformity, fire-safe rating to API 607 and SIL 3 suitability are available depending on the model. Flange connections follow EN 1092-1, threaded connections ISO 228-1 and ISO 7-1, and the compact body EN 558-1 series 27.

01 Stainless Steel Ball Valves by Connection Type

Fergo supplies stainless steel ball valves in four connection variants. Each design covers a specific nominal size range and pressure class. The following overview links each connection type to the matching series.

Threaded Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Threaded stainless steel ball valves in grade 1.4408 serve pipelines up to DN100 at PN63. The KH113 connects through a female taper thread to ISO 7-1. Its compact body makes this design the standard solution for instrumentation, laboratory supply, water treatment and chemical dosing systems. For gas applications, the KH124G offers DVGW gas approval and ATEX conformity. The 3-way variants KL103 and KT103 extend the threaded connection with L-port and T-port bore patterns for mixing and diverting duties.

Flanged Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Flanged stainless steel ball valves cover the range from DN15 to DN300 at PN16 to PN100. The flanges follow EN 1092-1, complemented by ANSI 150 and ANSI 300. The KH155 with TFM 1600 seat forms the core series for chemical and pharmaceutical process lines. The KH136 reaches PN100 with reinforced PTFE seat (15 % glass fibre). For DVGW drinking water duty, Fergo supplies the KH123W. Wrought steel 1.4404 is available in the KH156 as a compact body to EN 558-1 series 27.

Weld-End Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Weld-end ball valves join the valve body directly to the pipeline through butt-weld ends (BW). The KH154 in grade 1.4408 covers DN15 to DN100 at PN63. This design eliminates flange gaskets and reduces potential leak points in closed-loop systems. Typical applications include thermal oil circuits, steam condensate lines and chemical clean-in-place installations where dead legs are unacceptable.

Compact Stainless Steel Ball Valve

Compact ball valves use a shortened face-to-face length to EN 558-1 series 27 and save space in densely packed piping runs. The KH156 in wrought steel 1.4404 delivers DN15 to DN100 at PN16/40 with TFM 1600 seat. The compact body reduces weight compared with the standard face-to-face length and simplifies installation in control cabinets, skids and modular plant assemblies.

Grade Selection: Cast and Wrought Stainless Steel Compared

The choice between cast and wrought stainless steel determines the corrosion resistance, weldability and pressure class suitability of a stainless steel ball valve. Fergo stocks four austenitic stainless steel grades. The following table compares the technically relevant properties for project specification.

Criterion 1.4408 (CF8M) Cast 1.4404 (316L) Wrought 1.4401 (316) Wrought Duplex 1.4462
Carbon (C max.) 0.07 % 0.030 % 0.07 % 0.030 %
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.0–3.0 % 2.0–3.0 % 2.0–2.5 % 2.5–3.5 %
PRE (Pitting Resistance) ≈ 24–28 ≈ 24–28 ≈ 23–26 ≈ 35–40
IGC resistance after welding Good (cast structure) Very good (low carbon) Limited Very good
Temperature range −40 °C to +200 °C −40 °C to +200 °C −40 °C to +200 °C −40 °C to +250 °C
Max. pressure class PN100 / ANSI 300 PN40 PN40 On request
Post-weld service Body not weldable Ready without annealing Solution annealing recommended Ready without annealing
Typical application Chemical, pharma, seawater, food Weld-end, pharma, high-purity media General chemical industry Chloride seawater, offshore

Selection guidance: Grade 1.4408 suits most standard industrial applications and covers the widest DN range. Where the ball valve enters a welded pipeline and post-weld heat treatment must be avoided, grade 1.4404 (low carbon) is the preferred choice. For seawater desalination, offshore platforms and chloride-bearing media above 50 °C, duplex 1.4462 delivers the highest PRE value. Fergo custom solutions cover all duplex and special-alloy executions.

Seat Materials for Stainless Steel Ball Valves

The seat material determines the temperature resistance, chemical compatibility and leak tightness of a stainless steel ball valve. Fergo uses different seat materials depending on the series.

TFM 1600 (Modified PTFE)

TFM 1600 combines the universal chemical resistance of PTFE with higher density and lower cold-flow tendency. This material is the standard seat of the flanged series KH155, KH156 and KL112/KT112. The temperature range extends from −40 °C to +200 °C. TFM 1600 suits solvents, acids, alkalis and high-purity media.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)

PTFE delivers near-universal chemical resistance at −10 °C to +200 °C. Fergo uses PTFE seats in the threaded series KH113 and KH124G and in the flanged series KH123W and KH118. For higher mechanical loads, PTFE with 15 % glass-fibre reinforcement is available in the KH136 series. FDA-compliant versions enable use in food and pharmaceutical applications.

FKM / FPM (Viton)

FKM seats offer high resistance against mineral oils, fuels, aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons at −10 °C to +180 °C. Fergo supplies FKM as an optional seat for selected series. This material is not suitable for ketones, esters, hot water or steam.

Metal Seat

Metal seats in stainless steel or Stellite handle service temperatures up to +300 °C and withstand abrasive particles, steam and thermal oil. The KH136 is available on request with a metal seat. Metal seats deliver maximum durability but achieve lower leak tightness than soft seats.

Actuation and Automation

All Fergo stainless steel ball valves accept a pneumatic or electric quarter-turn actuator. The mounting interface follows ISO 5211 and allows direct coupling without an adapter plate.

Pneumatic Actuation

Fergo supplies pneumatic quarter-turn actuators in double-acting (DA) and spring-return (SR) execution for stainless steel ball valves. Spring-return actuators close on air-supply failure through spring force and therefore meet fail-safe requirements. The accessory range includes NAMUR solenoid valves, limit switch boxes and SIPART PS2 positioners. Pre-configured actuator packages from stock: pneumatic stainless steel ball valves in the shop.

Electric Actuation

J4C electric quarter-turn actuators operate on multi-voltage 24–240 V AC/DC and serve installations without a central compressed-air supply. Variants with positioner, battery spring return (BSR) and a combination of both are available. Pre-configured actuator packages from stock: electric stainless steel ball valves in the shop.

Fergo stainless steel ball valves comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. Flange connections follow DIN EN 1092-1, complemented by ANSI B16.5 Class 150 and 300 for inch-based pipework. Compact face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1 series 27, standard face-to-face lengths EN 558-1 series 14.

Depending on the series, the following approvals are available: DVGW drinking water to DIN EN 13828, DVGW gas to DIN EN 13774, TA-Luft conformity for fugitive emissions, fire-safe rating to API 607 / ISO 10497, ATEX conformity to 2014/34/EU and SIL 3 suitability to IEC 61508. Inspection documents to EN 10204 — type 2.2 works certificate or type 3.1 inspection certificate — are available on request.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock.
