Knife Gate Valves – DN50 to DN600, PN10, in Cast Iron and Stainless Steel, Uni- and Bi-Directional

Knife gate valves serve as compact shut-off and isolation valves in pipeline systems that transport solids, slurries, fibrous materials, granulates or viscous media. Unlike butterfly valves or ball valves, the blade cuts through the media stream and achieves reliable shut-off even with fibrous or granular media. For this reason, operators install knife gate valves primarily in wastewater treatment, pulp and paper, mining, food processing, chemical plants and silo discharge applications.

Fergo offers seven series for different installation scenarios. The FM200 fits as a wafer-type design directly between two pipe flanges and suits uni-directional shut-off applications. In contrast, the FB700 provides bi-directional sealing with a dead-space-free design and a steel-core-reinforced seat – ideal for plants that require both shut-off and isolation in two pressure directions. Additionally, the FH650 covers the high-pressure range up to PN100.

Fergo manufactures all series in cast iron GG25 or stainless steel 1.4408 (CF8M). Depending on operating conditions, customers choose NBR, EPDM or metal seats. Each series covers a specific application range. Below, Fergo describes the technical features and typical applications of all seven knife gate valve series.

FM200 – Wafer-Type Knife Gate Valve, Uni-Directional

The FM200 is Fergo’s best-selling series for standard shut-off applications. Fergo manufactures the FM200 as a wafer-type design in GG25 or stainless steel 1.4408. The valve seals uni-directionally in flow direction and suits wastewater, slurries, fibrous materials and granulates. Available in DN50 to DN600, PN10, with NBR, EPDM or metal seat.

FB200 – Knife Gate Valve with Weld Ends, Bi-Directional

The FB200 provides bi-directional sealing and is welded directly into the pipeline. This design eliminates flange connections and thereby reduces potential leak points. Fergo recommends the FB200 for slurries and viscous media in mining and pulp processing. Available in DN50 to DN600, PN10, GG25 or 1.4408.

FB700 – Lug-Type Knife Gate Valve, Dead-Space Free, Bi-Directional

The FB700 operates dead-space free and features a steel-core-reinforced seat with scraping action. Thanks to the lug-type design, Fergo can also install the FB700 as an end-of-line valve. In addition, it seals bi-directionally – ideal for processes with alternating flow direction. Available in DN50 to DN600, PN10, in GG25 or stainless steel.

FL300 – Fabric Gate Valve with Round Inlet

Fergo designs the FL300 specifically for transitions from round to rectangular cross-sections – for example at silo hoppers, bunkers or conveyor belts. The round inlet at the flange end guides the media into the rectangular blade channel. Available in GG25, DN50 to DN400, PN10.

FG400 – Silo Gate Valve for Bulk Materials

The FG400 controls material flow at silo outlets and bunkers. Fergo designs the silo gate valve for low pressures (PN6) and high mechanical stress from bulk materials such as cement, sand, limestone or grain. Available in GG25, DN80 to DN400, with metal or NBR seat.

FH650 – High-Pressure Knife Gate Valve up to PN100

The FH650 is Fergo’s high-pressure solution for applications with operating pressures up to 100 bar. Fergo manufactures the FH650 in GG25 or stainless steel 1.4408 with bi-directional metal seat. This makes the series suitable for steam, hot water and chemically aggressive media under high pressure. Available in DN50 to DN300.

FC – Rectangular Gate Valve for Special Cross-Sections

The FC shuts off rectangular and square duct cross-sections that standard gate valves cannot cover. Fergo manufactures the FC to individual dimensions in GG25 or stainless steel 1.4408. Typical applications include ventilation ducts, conveying systems and special plant designs.

Materials and Seals for Knife Gate Valves

The right material determines service life and operational safety of a knife gate valve. Fergo offers two body materials and several seat variants to cover different media, temperatures and chemical requirements.

Body – Cast Iron GG25 (EN-GJL-250)

Cast iron GG25 is the standard material for most knife gate valve series. Fergo uses GG25 in applications with neutral media, water, wastewater and slurries at temperatures from –10 °C to +120 °C. High compressive strength and a competitive price make GG25 the economical choice for standard industrial applications.

Body – Stainless Steel 1.4408 (CF8M)

Fergo manufactures the FM200, FB200, FB700 and FH650 series also in stainless steel 1.4408. This austenitic cast stainless steel resists corrosive media, acids and alkalis as well as high temperatures up to +200 °C. In the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries, plant standards frequently require stainless steel construction.

Blade – Hardened Stainless Steel

The blade cuts through the media stream and forms the sealing interface together with the seat. Fergo manufactures blades from hardened stainless steel so they can shear off solid particles, fibres and granulates permanently without premature wear.

Stem – Stainless Steel

Fergo uses stainless steel stems across all series. The stem transmits the actuating force to the blade and therefore must be corrosion-resistant, rigid and wear-resistant. Depending on the series, Fergo supplies a rising or non-rising stem design.

Seat – NBR (Nitrile Rubber)

NBR provides good resistance against mineral oils, greases and hydrocarbons. Fergo recommends NBR seats for wastewater with oil traces, cooling circuits and industrial processes at temperatures from –15 °C to +80 °C.

Seat – EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

EPDM suits water, steam, alkalis and oxidative media in the temperature range from –30 °C to +130 °C. Fergo uses EPDM seats in water treatment, sewage sludge handling and HVAC applications.

Seat – Metal

Metal seats serve in high-temperature, abrasive or chemically aggressive conditions. Fergo supplies metal seats as standard in the FH650 high-pressure series and as an option in the FM200, FB200 and FB700 series.

Seat – U-Profile (Steel-Core Reinforced)

The FB700 uses a steel-core-reinforced U-profile seat with integrated scraping action. This means the blade cleans the seat face with every stroke and prevents media deposits in the sealing area. This design ensures reliable tightness even after many switching cycles.

Uni-Directional or Bi-Directional – Selection Guide

The choice between uni-directional and bi-directional sealing determines the knife gate valve’s application range. Uni-directional models such as the FM200 shut off the media stream in one defined flow direction. Bi-directional models such as the FB700 withstand pressure from both directions and additionally serve as isolation valves between two plant sections.

Actuation and Automation

Fergo supplies knife gate valves with three actuation types. The choice depends on the required switching time, degree of automation and safety requirements of the plant.

Handwheel

Fergo equips all round series with a handwheel as standard. The handwheel suits manual shut-off and maintenance tasks where automatic control is not required. For larger nominal sizes from DN300, Fergo recommends a geared handwheel to reduce the required operating force.

Pneumatic Actuator

For automated processes, Fergo combines knife gate valves with pneumatic linear actuators. The pneumatic actuator opens and closes the blade via compressed air and enables short switching times. Fergo offers double-acting (DA) and spring-return (SR) actuators. Optionally, Fergo adds NAMUR solenoid valves, limit switch boxes and positioners for complete process integration.

Quick-Release Lever

Fergo supplies selected series with a quick-release lever for manual emergency operation. The lever enables fast blade closure without compressed air – suitable for safety shut-offs in silos, bunker installations and conveying systems.

Fergo designs and manufactures all knife gate valves according to recognised European standards. Compliance with these standards ensures interchangeability, test safety and conformity for the European market.

EN 558 Series 20 – defines the face-to-face lengths and ensures that knife gate valves from different manufacturers remain interchangeable. Fergo manufactures all wafer and lug-type versions according to this standard. → EN 558 at DIN Media
EN 1092-1 – specifies flange connection dimensions. All Fergo knife gate valves with flange connections comply with EN 1092-1 and fit standard PN10/PN16 counter flanges.
EN 12266-1 – defines the test requirements for industrial valves. Fergo tests every knife gate valve before dispatch according to this standard for shell and seat tightness.
