Actuators & Accessories: Complete Valve Automation

Reliable valve automation combines four functional groups: actuation, control, position feedback and the mechanical interface between valve and pipeline. All four must be matched to each other to deliver a leak-tight, safe and repeatable process. Fergo therefore supplies the complete range from a single source — from pneumatic and electric actuators through NAMUR solenoid valves and positioners to limit switch boxes, sensors, gaskets, stem extensions and pressure gauges.

Every actuator interface follows ISO 5211, so a Fergo actuator retrofits directly onto a matching ball valve, butterfly valve, knife gate valve or gate valve. Pneumatic actuators use the NAMUR interface to VDI/VDE 3845, which allows direct mounting of a NAMUR solenoid valve without additional tubing. Electric assemblies rely on the multi-voltage J4C part-turn actuator by J&J.

Automation packages are pre-assembled and tested in-house before shipment. Fergo delivers the complete valve assembly with data sheets, ISO 5211 dimensional drawings and, on request, 3D CAD STEP models. Applications range from HVAC and water treatment through chemical and process plants to safety-relevant service in ATEX zones. 01 Actuation — Pneumatic and Electric

The pneumatic actuators come in double-acting and single-acting spring-return versions. Double-acting units switch in both directions on compressed air, while spring-return models close (fail-safe close) or open (fail-safe open) on air-supply failure. Mounting flanges follow ISO 5211 in sizes F03 through F16, and the NAMUR pattern on the top allows direct solenoid mounting.

Where compressed air is not available, the J4C electric part-turn actuator is the reference solution. It is built by J&J and covers a torque range from 20 Nm (J4C-S20) up to 300 Nm across the S20, S35, S55, S85, S110, S150, S220 and S300 models. The multi-voltage system accepts 24 V, 230 V and 240 V AC as well as 24 V through 135 V DC on the same unit. The 90-degree running time is roughly nine seconds at 75 % duty cycle, the polyamide (PA6) housing carries protection class IP67, and the ISO 5211 flange fits F03, F04 and F05.

02 Control — NAMUR Solenoid Valves and Siemens Positioner

The NAMUR solenoid valves mount directly to the top of a pneumatic actuator on the VDI/VDE 3845 interface. Fergo carries 3/2-way and 5/2-way versions, single-acting and double-acting, at 24 V DC and other voltages including ATEX variants for explosive atmospheres. The MNH 510 701 5/2-way solenoid, for example, uses a G 1/4″ port, an anodised aluminium frame with NBR seals, and operates between 1.5 and 10 bar at IP65.

For modulating duty, the positioner section carries the Siemens SIPART PS2 electropneumatic positioner. It compares the 4–20 mA control signal continuously with the actual valve position and adjusts the pneumatic actuator accordingly, keeping control ball valves and modulating butterfly valves exactly on setpoint. Optional expansion modules and HART, PROFIBUS or Foundation Fieldbus variants extend the range further.

03 Position Feedback — Limit Switch Boxes and Inductive Sensors

The Switchmaster limit switch box provides electrical OPEN/CLOSED feedback back to the control system. The Switchmaster-M2 version uses mechanical microswitches with gold-plated contacts, a Lexan 143 housing with antistatic coating, 4 V DC to 250 V AC at 1 mA to 5 A, and IP67 across −20 °C to +70 °C. The EB300-PP2I02 variant carries two P+F NBB2-V3-E2 inductive proximity switches (PNP N.O.) at 10–30 V DC in a polyamide/polycarbonate enclosure — the choice for high switching frequencies and long service life. Both are visible from a distance thanks to the mechanical position indicator on top.

For fully contactless feedback the inductive dual sensors from IFM — including the IFT 206, IN5334, IN5327, NN5008 and IN5225 — provide two switching signals from one compact housing. They are robust, low-maintenance and rated for extreme industrial conditions.

04 Mechanical Interfaces — Gaskets, Stem Extensions, Gauges

The flange gaskets seal the valve against the counter-flange. Fergo carries HD aramid-fibre gaskets (asbestos-free) from DN20 to DN150 across PN10 through PN40, all approved to EEL, W270, DVGW, WRAS and EN 1092-1/-2. Graphite gaskets with a metal insert are available for Fire-Safe and high-temperature service and carry BAM and DVGW approval alongside Fire-Safe and EN 1092 conformity.

The stem extension range covers buried pipelines, insulated lines and hazardous zones where the actuator sits away from the valve. Extensions are manufactured to length for ball valves and butterfly valves and mate onto the ISO 5211 mounting flange. The pressure gauge range covers 0 to 100 bar with glycerine-filled units, ABS or stainless steel cases and dial diameters of 53 mm, 63 mm and 100 mm.

Every actuator interface follows ISO 5211, which sets the mounting flange dimensions (F03 through F16) and the drive shaft profile. Pneumatic actuators additionally follow the NAMUR interface to VDI/VDE 3845 for solenoid valves and to VDI/VDE 3847 for the direct positioner mount. As a result, actuators, solenoid valves and positioners are cross-compatible across brands and drop straight onto the valve.

Automation assemblies comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. ATEX-certified solenoid valves and actuators serve zones 1, 2, 21 and 22. Flange gaskets carry DVGW, WRAS, BAM and Fire-Safe approvals; the aramid-fibre gaskets also meet the drinking-water tests EEL and W270. Fergo assembles the actuator, the solenoid valve, the limit switch box or inductive sensor and the mounting bracket in-house, tests each assembly and ships it with the corresponding data sheets and, on request, 3D CAD STEP models.
