Globe Valves: Precise Flow Control and Tight Shut-Off

A globe valve — also called a shut-off or stop valve — controls the flow with a disc that moves axially onto a seat. Turning the handwheel raises or lowers the disc against the flow. As a result, the valve throttles the medium finely instead of only opening or closing it. This sets a globe valve apart from a gate valve, which is built for full-open or full-closed duty.

Fergo supplies three flanged series. The UV116 uses a grey cast iron body (EN-JL1040), the VG430 a steel body (1.0619), and the VG450 a stainless steel body (1.4408/CF8M). The nominal sizes run from DN15 to DN300. Flange connections follow EN 1092-1 form B1, and face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1 series 1. Pressure ratings cover PN10, PN16, PN25 and PN40, complemented by ANSI Class 150, 300 and 600 for inch-based pipework.

Globe valves serve steam and hot water systems, chemical and aggressive media, oil and gas pipelines, HVAC, food and pharmaceutical production as well as energy supply. The steel VG430 and stainless VG450 withstand operating temperatures up to +400 °C. Therefore they suit steam and thermal-oil lines where tight, throttleable shut-off matters. A graphite gland packing seals the stem and meets TA-Luft emission limits.

01 Globe Valves by Sealing Design

The flanged globe valves form the core of the range. They seal the stem with a high-quality graphite gland packing that withstands temperatures up to +400 °C. The UV116 in grey cast iron suits water, hot water and general utility service. The VG430 in steel and the VG450 in stainless steel, by contrast, carry TA-Luft, AD2000, NACE and PED approval for steam, oil, gas and aggressive media. Nominal sizes range from DN15 to DN300.

02 Bellows-Sealed Globe Valves

The bellows-sealed globe valves add a metal bellows around the stem, which rules out any leak path at the spindle. Consequently they are the first choice for media that are hazardous, environmentally harmful, valuable or highly pure. The bellows shields the stem from the medium and the environment from the medium alike. This design runs virtually maintenance-free and delivers maximum emission control.

Body Materials

1. Grey Cast Iron EN-JL1040 / GG25 (UV116)

  • Application: water, hot water, HVAC circuits, cooling water, general utility and building services
  • Temperature: up to +120 °C · PN16
  • Advantages: high dimensional stability, good vibration damping, economical for standard duty, wide Kvs range from DN15 to DN300
  • Limitations: not suitable for steam above its temperature limit, aggressive chemicals or chloride-rich media

2. Steel 1.0619 (VG430)

  • Application: steam, thermal oil, hot water, oil and gas pipelines, refineries, power generation
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C · PN16 and PN40
  • Advantages: high mechanical strength, TA-Luft, AD2000, NACE and PED approved, proven in steam service with graphite gland packing
  • Limitations: not corrosion-resistant on its own; requires suitable media selection for aggressive fluids

3. Stainless Steel 1.4408 / CF8M (VG450)

  • Application: chemical and aggressive media, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, demineralised water, hygiene-critical steam
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C · PN40
  • Advantages: high corrosion resistance through molybdenum, hygienic surface, durable with acids and alkalis, TA-Luft and PED approved
  • Limitations: higher material cost than cast iron and steel

4. Ductile Cast Iron GGG40.3 (special design)

  • Application: higher mechanical loads than grey cast iron, water and utility service in demanding installations
  • Temperature: up to +120 °C (seat dependent)
  • Advantages: higher tensile strength and toughness than GG25, greater impact resistance
  • Limitations: still not suited to corrosive media without a suitable coating or lining

Trim and Sealing Materials

1. Disc Cone Stainless Steel 1.4021, Seat Stainless Steel 1.4006 (UV116)

  • Application: wetted trim of the grey cast iron series for water, hot water and utility media
  • Temperature: up to +120 °C
  • Advantages: hardened martensitic stainless trim for tight seating and wear resistance, corrosion-resistant against water
  • Limitations: limited resistance to chlorides and strong acids

2. Graphite Gland Packing (TA-Luft)

  • Application: stem sealing of all gland-packed series, steam and high-temperature duty
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C
  • Advantages: meets TA-Luft emission limits, high temperature resistance, adjustable and reliable, suitable for a wide media range
  • Limitations: requires occasional retightening; not a fully leak-proof stem barrier like a bellows

3. Metal Bellows with SS304 + Graphite Body Gasket

  • Application: stem sealing of the bellows-sealed series for hazardous, pure or valuable media
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C
  • Advantages: hermetic stem barrier, virtually maintenance-free, maximum emission control, SS304 + graphite body gasket adds a second static seal
  • Limitations: higher price than a gland packing; bellows has a defined cycle life

Fergo globe valves comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. The steel and stainless series additionally hold TA-Luft approval for emission control, AD2000 and AD2000-A4 for German pressure equipment codes, plus NACE for sour service. Fire-Safe designs to API 607 and API 6FA are available for safety-critical applications. Flange connections follow EN 1092-1 form B1, and face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1 series 1, complemented by ANSI B16.5 Class 150, 300 and 600.

Inspection documents to EN 10204 — type 2.2 works certificate or type 3.1 inspection certificate — are available on request. A full overview of all certificates is published on the Fergo certificate page. For steam and condensate systems, GESTRA steam traps complement the globe valve installation. You can verify material compatibility with your medium beforehand using the Fergo resistance check.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock. Over 180 of them are globe valves across the UV116, VG430 and VG450 series — in every common nominal size, body material and sealing design. Orders are picked the same working day. Express shipping therefore delivers within the next working days.

Fergo ships across Europe — including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Nordic countries and all other EU member states. Smaller valves travel by parcel service, whereas large-bore and consolidated shipments go by forwarding agent. You will find shipping costs, payment options and express terms on the shipping and payment terms page.
