Product Overview

Wafer Butterfly Valves: Compact Shut-Off Between Counter-Flanges

A wafer butterfly valve clamps between two counter-flanges of the pipeline and needs no flanges of its own. Long through-bolts pass around the body and pull both flanges tight against the seat ring, so the valve stays leak-tight without any lug or thread on the housing. Consequently the wafer type butterfly valve is the lightest and most economical butterfly design, and it is the default choice from DN40 upwards wherever both pipe ends remain permanently installed.

Fergo supplies the wafer range in the AK200 standard series with an EPDM, NBR, FKM/Viton or PTFE seat, and in the DVGW-certified AK210G for gas and AK210W for drinking water. Bodies are ductile iron GGG40 with a 150 µm epoxy coating, discs are stainless steel 1.4408 / CF8M, and shafts are AISI 420 or AISI 316. Nominal sizes cover DN40 to DN500 at PN10 and PN16, and the wafer face-to-face length follows EN 558-1 Series 20. Flange dimensions comply with EN 1092-1 and ANSI Class 150, and actuator flanges meet ISO 5211.

Wafer butterfly valves serve water supply and wastewater plants, HVAC and district heating circuits, cooling water, fire protection systems, food and beverage production, chemical processing and gas distribution. Operators choose between a cast iron or aluminium hand lever, a gearbox, a pneumatic actuator or the J4C electric actuator. Where dead-end service or single-side disassembly is required, the lug butterfly valve range takes over, and for severe process temperatures and pressures the double-eccentric butterfly valve range provides the high-performance alternative.

01 AK200 — Standard Wafer Butterfly Valve (EPDM / NBR / FKM)

The AK200 wafer butterfly valve is the flagship of the range. Body in GGG40 with a 150 µm epoxy coating, disc in stainless steel 1.4408 / CF8M and shaft in AISI 420. The seat ring is available in EPDM for water and dilute alkalis, NBR for oils and hydrocarbons or FKM/Viton for aggressive chemicals and elevated temperatures. Sizes span DN40 to DN500 at PN10, PN16 and ANSI Class 150, and every variant accepts a hand lever, a gearbox, a pneumatic actuator or an electric actuator through the ISO 5211 mounting flange.

02 AK200 — PTFE-Lined Wafer Butterfly Valve with EPDM Support Ring

For chemically aggressive service, the AK200 is also available with a PTFE seat ring backed by an EPDM support ring. The PTFE face provides near-universal chemical resistance across acids, alkalis and solvents, whereas the EPDM support ring restores the elastic recovery that pure PTFE lacks — the two layers together deliver both chemical resistance and reliable sealing force. Temperature range −20 °C to +120 °C at PN10. Suitable for chemical dosing lines, plating shops and pharmaceutical processes where the medium exceeds the limits of EPDM or Viton.

03 AK210G — DVGW Gas Wafer Butterfly Valve

The AK210G wafer gas butterfly valve carries the DVGW Gas approval to DIN EN 13774 for fuel gases under DVGW-Arbeitsblatt G 260. The GGG40 body is finished with an epoxy coating, the disc is stainless steel 1.4408 and the seat ring is NBR — the mandatory elastomer for DVGW gas service. Operating range covers −20 °C to +60 °C at PN10 or PN16 across DN40 to DN500, and the valve is suitable for natural gas, biogas and LPG vapour phase in municipal grids and industrial gas skids.

04 AK210W — DVGW Drinking Water Wafer Butterfly Valve

The AK210W wafer drinking water butterfly valve holds the separate DVGW drinking water approval. The EPDM seat ring is tested against DVGW-Arbeitsblatt W 270 for microbiological suitability in potable water contact, and the body coating is approved for drinking water service. The stainless steel 1.4408 disc keeps the wetted metal surface corrosion-resistant, and an epoxy-coated GGG40 disc with Resicoat R4 is available as an economical alternative at large nominal sizes. Standard actuation options match the rest of the range.

Body and Disc Materials

1. Ductile Iron GGG40 with Epoxy Coating 150 µm (Standard Body)

Application: water supply, wastewater, HVAC, cooling water, fire protection, gas distribution and drinking water networks — the standard body across every AK200, AK210G and AK210W wafer variant

Temperature: up to +120 °C with an EPDM seat · gas −20 °C to +60 °C with NBR · PN10 and PN16

Advantages: high toughness and vibration damping, economical up to DN500, the 150 µm epoxy layer resists corrosion in both external and internal contact with water and gas

Limitations: not suitable for permanently chloride-rich, saline or aggressive chemical media without additional protection

2. Stainless Steel Disc 1.4408 / CF8M (Standard Disc)

Application: standard disc across every wafer variant for water, gas and general process duty

Temperature: matches the seat envelope

Advantages: molybdenum content resists pitting and crevice corrosion, no metal-ion pickup into drinking water, dimensionally stable under bolt load, hygienic surface

Limitations: higher cost than a coated GGG40 disc — the Resicoat R4 coated disc is the economical alternative for large-bore drinking water service

Seat Ring Materials

1. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

Application: drinking water (DVGW-approved variant), hot water, dilute acids and alkalis, water treatment, HVAC — the standard seat for water service

Temperature: −30 °C to +120 °C

Advantages: excellent ozone and ageing resistance, wide temperature window, hygienically tested against DVGW-Arbeitsblatt W 270 for potable water in the AK210W variant

Limitations: not compatible with mineral oils, hydrocarbons or fuel gases — do not use in place of NBR for gas service

2. NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber)

Application: mineral oils, animal and vegetable fats, fuels, compressed air, natural gas and biogas — the standard seat for the DVGW gas variant AK210G

Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C

Advantages: outstanding oil and grease resistance, excellent low-temperature flexibility for gas service, tight bubble-free shut-off, mandatory elastomer for DVGW Gas approval to DIN EN 13774

Limitations: not suitable for hot water above 80 °C, steam, ozone or oxidising chemicals

3. FKM / FPM (Viton)

Application: aggressive chemicals, solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, elevated temperatures in chemical and petrochemical processes

Temperature: −20 °C to +180 °C

Advantages: very high chemical and thermal resistance, ozone-resistant, handles a broader spectrum of process media than EPDM or NBR

Limitations: not compatible with ketones, esters, hot water or steam; premium price compared with EPDM and NBR

4. PTFE Seat with EPDM Support Ring

Application: highly aggressive chemical service — concentrated acids, alkalis, halogenated solvents — where EPDM and Viton reach their chemical limits

Temperature: −20 °C to +120 °C at PN10

Advantages: the PTFE face gives near-universal chemical resistance and is FDA-compliant for food-contact duty, while the EPDM support ring restores the elastic recovery that pure PTFE lacks and maintains sealing force over thousands of cycles

Limitations: lower pressure rating than the elastomer-only variants; not intended for abrasive slurries that would erode the PTFE face

Fergo wafer butterfly valves comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. Gas versions AK210G hold the DVGW Gas approval to DIN EN 13774 for fuel gases under DVGW-Arbeitsblatt G 260, and drinking water versions AK210W carry the separate DVGW drinking water approval, with the EPDM seat verified against DVGW-Arbeitsblatt W 270 for microbiological suitability. Wafer face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1 Series 20, flange dimensions comply with EN 1092-1 and ANSI Class 150, and actuator mounting flanges meet ISO 5211.

Two international standards are of particular relevance to wafer butterfly valves. MSS SP-67 sets the design, testing and marking requirements for butterfly valves in general industrial service, and AWWA C504 covers rubber-seated butterfly valves specifically for water works service — Fergo’s AK200 with an EPDM seat aligns with the AWWA C504 material and construction philosophy for potable water networks. Inspection documents to EN 10204 — the type 2.2 works certificate or the type 3.1 inspection certificate — are available on request. A full overview of all certificates is published on the Fergo certificate page. You can verify seat and body compatibility with your medium beforehand using the Fergo resistance check.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock. Wafer butterfly valves in the AK200 standard series and the DVGW-certified AK210G and AK210W series are available in every common nominal size from DN40 to DN500, in every seat material and in every actuation type. Automation is carried out in-house with a gearbox, a pneumatic actuator or the J4C electric actuator, so a pneumatic wafer butterfly valve or an electrically actuated version leaves the warehouse fully assembled and tested. A Switchmaster limit switch box provides visual and electrical position feedback for automated packages.

Fergo ships across Europe — including the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries and all other EU member states.
