Construction and Materials of the Electric Actuators
1. PA6 Housing (J4C)
Application: all J4C sizes S20 to S300.
Temperature: –20 °C to +70 °C.
Advantages: high chemical resistance, low weight, intrinsic IP67 protection, natural electrical insulation and UV resistance.
Limitations: ambient temperature limited to 70 °C. For high-temperature applications, AUMA or DEUFRA actuators with metal housings are recommended.
2. Aluminium and Ductile Iron Housing (AUMA, DEUFRA)
Application: all AUMA SA/SAR/SQ/SQR series and all DEUFRA SQ/OA/AS series.
Temperature: –40 °C to +80 °C (depending on model and options).
Advantages: the cast aluminium actuator body provides an optimal strength-to-weight ratio. The ductile iron gearbox housing ensures high mechanical load capacity. The IP67/68 protection consequently guards reliably against dust, water and temporary immersion.
Limitations: higher weight than PA6. For applications with extreme weight constraints, the J4C is the lighter alternative.
3. Mounting Interface ISO 5211
Application: all three product lines J4C, AUMA and DEUFRA.
Advantages: the standardised ISO 5211 mounting interface ensures direct compatibility with ball valves, butterfly valves and gate valves from various manufacturers. Intermediate flanges are furthermore available when the valve interface differs.
Limitations: the correct flange size (F03–F25) depends on the required torque and the valve stem.
4. Control Technology – J4C, AUMA MATIC, INTELLI+
J4C: simple on/off control via volt-free contacts. Optional: integrated positioner 0–10V / 4–20 mA and BSR battery backup.
AUMA MATIC: modular controls with limit switching, torque monitoring, position feedback and fieldbus connectivity (Profibus DP, Modbus RTU, HART, Foundation Fieldbus). Expandable with diagnostics and remote access.
INTELLI+ (DEUFRA): intelligent integrated controls with non-intrusive settings, user-friendly interface and advanced diagnostics and maintenance features. For on/off, inching/positioning and modulating duty (Class III per EN 15714-2).
All three systems consequently enable direct integration into supervisory control systems (PLC/DCS).
5. ATEX Certification (AUMA, DEUFRA)
Application: AUMA SA/SAR/SQ/SQR and DEUFRA SQ/OA/AS in hazardous areas.
Advantages: certified versions for Zone 1/2 (gas) and Zone 21/22 (dust) per the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
Limitations: ATEX versions require project-specific engineering. The J4C series is currently not ATEX-certified.
