Product Overview

Electric Actuators – J4C, AUMA and DEUFRA for Industrial Valve Automation

The electric actuator converts electrical energy into a rotary or quarter-turn movement to automate industrial valves such as ball valves, butterfly valves, gate valves and control valves. Unlike the pneumatic actuator, the electric actuator requires no compressed air supply and is consequently suited for locations without an air network. The standardised mounting interface per ISO 5211 ensures direct compatibility between actuator and valve. Fergo partners with all leading manufacturers in the field of actuator technology, sizes the actuators to customer specifications, mounts them onto the valve and adjusts them before dispatch — Plug-and-Play.

Fergo offers three product lines of electric actuators. The J4C series is a compact quarter-turn actuator (90°) with torques from 20 to 300 Nm, multi-voltage 24V–240V AC/DC, PA6 housing, IP67 and optional positioner (0–10V / 4–20 mA) or BSR battery backup. The AUMA actuators comprise the SA/SAR multi-turn series and SQ/SQR quarter-turn series with modular design, aluminium and ductile iron housing, IP67/68, AUMA MATIC controls, fieldbus connectivity (Profibus, Modbus, HART) and ATEX certification. The DEUFRA actuators (Bernard Controls) offer quarter-turn and multi-turn drives of the SQ, OA and AS series with INTELLI+ control technology, aluminium and ductile iron housing, IP67/68, ATEX certification and a German base in Troisdorf near Cologne for fast availability.

These electric actuators are designed for water treatment, power generation, chemical industry, petrochemicals, oil and gas, HVAC, food processing and municipal infrastructure. For combination with butterfly valves and flanged ball valves, Fergo furthermore delivers pre-assembled and tested units.

01 J4C – Electric Quarter-Turn Actuator

The J4C series is a compact quarter-turn actuator (90°) for ball valves, butterfly valves and knife gate valves. Torque ratings range from 20 Nm (S20) to 300 Nm (S300). The multi-voltage supply of 24V–240V AC/DC enables universal use without rewiring. The PA6 housing achieves IP67 protection. The travel time is approximately 9 seconds for 90°. Optional versions with integrated positioner (0–10V / 4–20 mA) and BSR battery backup (fail-close/fail-open) are available. The mounting flange is ISO 5211 F03/F04/F05. The J4C is consequently the cost-effective solution for standard automation of small and medium-sized valves.

02 AUMA – Multi-Turn and Quarter-Turn Actuators

The AUMA actuators comprise the SA and SAR multi-turn series for gate valves, globe valves and control valves, as well as the SQ and SQR quarter-turn series for butterfly valves and ball valves. The modular product concept enables customer-specific configuration from motor, gearing, controls and accessories. The housings consist of cast aluminium (actuator) and ductile iron (gearbox) with IP67 or IP68 protection. The AUMA MATIC controls integrate limit switching, torque monitoring, position feedback and fieldbus connectivity (Profibus DP, Modbus RTU, HART, Foundation Fieldbus). ATEX-certified versions are available for hazardous areas. AUMA actuators are consequently the solution for demanding automation tasks in the water, energy and process industry.

03 DEUFRA – Electric Actuators by Bernard Controls

The DEUFRA actuators (Bernard Controls) offer quarter-turn drives of the SQ series and multi-turn drives of the OA and AS series for all common valve types. The INTELLI+ control technology provides a user-friendly interface, non-intrusive settings and advanced diagnostics and maintenance features. The housings consist of cast aluminium (actuator) and ductile iron (gearbox) with IP67/68 protection (NEMA 4/4X/6/6P). ATEX certifications are available. Bernard Controls DEUFRA is based in Troisdorf near Cologne and operates its own warehouse with an attached workshop for short delivery times and repair service in Germany. DEUFRA is consequently the choice for users seeking a German point of contact with more than 75 years of experience in electric actuation technology.

Construction and Materials of the Electric Actuators

1. PA6 Housing (J4C)

Application: all J4C sizes S20 to S300.
Temperature: –20 °C to +70 °C.
Advantages: high chemical resistance, low weight, intrinsic IP67 protection, natural electrical insulation and UV resistance.
Limitations: ambient temperature limited to 70 °C. For high-temperature applications, AUMA or DEUFRA actuators with metal housings are recommended.

2. Aluminium and Ductile Iron Housing (AUMA, DEUFRA)

Application: all AUMA SA/SAR/SQ/SQR series and all DEUFRA SQ/OA/AS series.
Temperature: –40 °C to +80 °C (depending on model and options).
Advantages: the cast aluminium actuator body provides an optimal strength-to-weight ratio. The ductile iron gearbox housing ensures high mechanical load capacity. The IP67/68 protection consequently guards reliably against dust, water and temporary immersion.
Limitations: higher weight than PA6. For applications with extreme weight constraints, the J4C is the lighter alternative.

3. Mounting Interface ISO 5211

Application: all three product lines J4C, AUMA and DEUFRA.
Advantages: the standardised ISO 5211 mounting interface ensures direct compatibility with ball valves, butterfly valves and gate valves from various manufacturers. Intermediate flanges are furthermore available when the valve interface differs.
Limitations: the correct flange size (F03–F25) depends on the required torque and the valve stem.

4. Control Technology – J4C, AUMA MATIC, INTELLI+

J4C: simple on/off control via volt-free contacts. Optional: integrated positioner 0–10V / 4–20 mA and BSR battery backup.
AUMA MATIC: modular controls with limit switching, torque monitoring, position feedback and fieldbus connectivity (Profibus DP, Modbus RTU, HART, Foundation Fieldbus). Expandable with diagnostics and remote access.
INTELLI+ (DEUFRA): intelligent integrated controls with non-intrusive settings, user-friendly interface and advanced diagnostics and maintenance features. For on/off, inching/positioning and modulating duty (Class III per EN 15714-2).
All three systems consequently enable direct integration into supervisory control systems (PLC/DCS).

5. ATEX Certification (AUMA, DEUFRA)

Application: AUMA SA/SAR/SQ/SQR and DEUFRA SQ/OA/AS in hazardous areas.
Advantages: certified versions for Zone 1/2 (gas) and Zone 21/22 (dust) per the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU.
Limitations: ATEX versions require project-specific engineering. The J4C series is currently not ATEX-certified.

Fergo electric actuators comply with the key European and international standards for valve automation. All three product lines use the standardised ISO 5211 mounting interface. IP67 (J4C, AUMA, DEUFRA) and IP68 (AUMA, DEUFRA) protection complies with EN 60529. AUMA and DEUFRA actuators are available in ATEX-certified versions per the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. CE marking confirms conformity with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU and EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.

Factory certificates, technical datasheets and 3D STEP models are available on the Fergo certificates page. For sizing the correct torque and model, the technical advisory team supports the selection.
