Product Overview

Y-Strainers – DN8 to DN400, PN10 to PN40, Stainless Steel, Steel, Cast Iron and Brass

The Y-strainer (also known as Y-filter or pipeline strainer) is a pipeline filter with the characteristic Y-shape. The screen sits diagonally in the Y-branch so that solids collect at the lowest point without obstructing the flow. When the drain plug is opened, the chamber can be emptied or the screen removed and cleaned — without dismantling the body from the pipeline. Cast iron Y-strainers comply with EN 1092-2 for flanged connections and EN 558-1 for face-to-face dimensions.

The flanged strainers are available in stainless steel 1.4408 (PN16/40, –40 °C to +450 °C, AD2000-A4), steel 1.0619/GS-C25 (PN16/40, –10 °C to +400 °C, AD2000-A4) and cast iron GG25 EN-JL1040 (PN10/16, 0 °C to +350 °C), from DN15 to DN400. The threaded strainers in nickel-plated brass and stainless steel 1.4408/CF8M with BSP female thread per ISO 228-1 or ISO 7-1 (EN 10226-1) cover the smaller sizes from DN8 to DN50, PN20–PN40. The screen is standard stainless steel 1.4301 or SS316 with mesh sizes of 0.05 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1 mm, 1.25 mm, 1.6 mm or 2 mm.

These Y-strainers are designed to protect pumps, control valves, heat exchangers, steam traps and flow meters. Typical applications: water treatment, heating and cooling, steam systems, drinking water, chemical processing, food and beverage and process plants. Upstream installation protects the seat and ball of a ball valve and the disc of a butterfly valve against solids.

01 Flanged Strainers – Stainless Steel, Steel and Cast Iron

The flanged strainers are the standard solution for larger sizes from DN15 upwards. Available materials: stainless steel 1.4408 (MY201, PN16/40, –40 °C to +450 °C, AD2000-A4), steel 1.0619/GS-C25 (SF200, PN16/40, –10 °C to +400 °C, AD2000-A4) and cast iron GG25 EN-JL1040 (FP110, PN10/16, 0 °C to +350 °C). Flange connections comply with EN 1092-1 (smooth face) or EN 1092-2 (coarse sealing strip, type B1). Face-to-face dimensions follow DIN EN 558-1 series 1. Screen standard: stainless steel 1.4301, mesh sizes from 0.25 mm to 2 mm.

02 Threaded Strainers – Brass and Stainless Steel

The threaded Y-strainers are designed for smaller sizes from DN8 to DN50. Available materials: nickel-plated brass (BSP female thread per ISO 228, PN20, –20 °C to +110 °C, NBR seals, fine mesh sizes from 0.05 mm) and stainless steel 1.4408/CF8M (ISO 7-1 or ISO 228-1, PN40, PTFE seals, mesh size 1 mm). The compact form and threaded connection allow fast installation and easy screen removal for cleaning.

Materials of the Strainers – Body and Screen

1. Stainless Steel 1.4408 (CF8M / AISI 316)

Application: chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, seawater and corrosive media.
Temperature: –40 °C to +450 °C.
Pressure rating: PN16, PN40.
Advantages: full corrosion resistance, high media purity, AD2000-A4 certification.
Limitations: higher unit cost than cast iron.

2. Steel 1.0619 (GS-C25 / ASTM A216 WCB)

Application: steam, petrochemicals, power generation, high-pressure pipelines.
Temperature: –10 °C to +400 °C.
Pressure rating: PN16, PN40.
Advantages: high mechanical strength, AD2000-A4 certification, cost-effective for high-pressure duty.
Limitations: susceptible to corrosion without surface treatment.

3. Cast Iron GG25 (EN-JL1040)

Application: water, heating, HVAC, standard duty.
Temperature: 0 °C to +350 °C.
Pressure rating: PN10, PN16.
Advantages: cost-effective, excellent vibration damping.
Limitations: not suited for aggressive media and freezing service.

4. Nickel-Plated Brass (CW617N)

Application: drinking water, heating, sanitary, compressed air, DN8 to DN50.
Temperature: –20 °C to +110 °C.
Pressure rating: PN20.
Advantages: good corrosion resistance in neutral media, low weight, fine mesh sizes from 0.05 mm.
Limitations: pressure and temperature limited.

5. Screen – Stainless Steel 1.4301 / SS316

Standard material: stainless steel 1.4301 for cast iron and steel bodies, SS316 for stainless steel bodies.
Mesh sizes: 0.05 mm · 0.25 mm · 0.3 mm · 0.5 mm · 0.8 mm · 1 mm · 1.25 mm · 1.6 mm · 2 mm.
Advantages: corrosion resistance, high form stability, reusable after cleaning. Non-standard mesh sizes on request.

Mesh Size – Selection by Application and Protected Fitting

The correct mesh size depends on the particle size in the medium and on the sensitivity of the downstream fitting to be protected. A mesh too fine causes high pressure drop and frequent cleaning. A mesh too coarse provides insufficient protection.

Fine mesh (0.05 mm to 0.3 mm)

For upstream protection of precision fittings: flow meters, diaphragm valves, dosing pumps and fine-control valves. Typical applications: drinking water (0.05 mm to 0.25 mm), pharmaceuticals and semiconductor manufacturing.

Medium mesh (0.5 mm to 1 mm)

Standard for upstream protection of ball valves, butterfly valves and steam traps. Typical applications: HVAC, heating, cooling, water treatment, general process plants. 1 mm is the most common standard mesh.

Coarse mesh (1.25 mm to 2 mm)

For upstream protection of robust fittings and for media with high solids content: steam systems, raw water, cooling loops and industrial process lines. 1.6 mm is the most common mesh for steam and large sizes.

The flanged strainers in stainless steel 1.4408 and steel 1.0619 carry AD2000-A4 certification for pressure equipment. Face-to-face dimensions follow EN 558-1 series 1. Flanged connections comply with EN 1092-1 (smooth face) or EN 1092-2 (coarse sealing strip type B1). Threaded connections follow ISO 228-1 (BSP) for brass and ISO 7-1 (EN 10226-1) for stainless steel. PED 2014/68/EU is covered for applicable models. DVGW certification for drinking water applications is available for selected models.
