Ball Check Valves: Self-Cleaning Backflow Protection for Solids-Laden Media

at and lets the medium pass. As soon as the pressure drops or the flow reverses, gravity rolls the ball back onto the seat. The valve therefore works entirely on differential pressure, without an actuator, control signal or auxiliary power. Every opening cycle flushes the sealing face clean, which makes the ball design particularly suitable for solid-laden and fibrous media.

Fergo supplies two series. The RB105 carries a ductile iron GGG40 body (EN-GJS-400-15) with an aluminium ball NBR-coated. It covers DN50 to DN500 at PN10 and PN16, with flange drilling to EN 1092-2 and face-to-face length to EN 558-1 series 48. The RB106, by contrast, uses a stainless steel 1.4408 (AISI 316) body with a steel ball NBR-coated. It runs from DN15 to DN300, with either a BSP socket to ISO 228/1 or a flange to DIN PN16.

Ball check valves serve wastewater and sewage plants, water supply, pressure boosting stations, irrigation, cooling water circuits, chemical and process industry, food, beverage and pharmaceutical production, mining slurries and pulp and paper. They complement the wider non-return valve range and prevent water hammer whenever a pump stops. An upstream Y-strainer additionally keeps coarse particles off the seat.

01 Flanged Ends Ball Check Valves (RB105, RB106)

The RB105 flanged ball check valves form the core of the range. The ductile iron body EN-GJS-400-15 handles high mechanical loads at an economical price. The aluminium ball NBR-coated resists abrasion from grit, sand and fibres in wastewater. Flange drilling follows EN 1092-2 PN16, face-to-face length EN 558-1 series 48. Sizes run from DN50 to DN500. This design is standard in municipal wastewater, irrigation and cooling water systems.

02 Threaded Ends Ball Check Valves (RB106)

For smaller bores and hygienic media, Fergo supplies threaded ball check valves of the RB106 series with a BSP female thread to ISO 228/1. The stainless steel 1.4408 body pairs with a steel ball NBR-coated. Sizes cover DN15 to DN80, with a compact face-to-face length between 140 and 175 mm. This variant fits building services, laboratory lines, food processing and small pump circuits.

03 PFA-Lined Ball Check Valves (Related Range)

For flanged installations that need full corrosion resistance, the RB106 is also available as a flanged version. Its 1.4408 body meets chemical, food and pharmaceutical requirements including seawater and chloride-loaded media. Wetted internals stay in stainless steel throughout. Flanges follow DIN PN16, face-to-face length EN 558-1 series 48. Sizes run from DN50 to DN300 at 16 bar.

Body Materials

1. Ductile Cast Iron GGG40 / EN-GJS-400-15 (RB105)

  • Application: wastewater, sewage plants, water supply, irrigation, cooling water circuits, industrial utility service
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C · PN10 and PN16
  • Advantages: high toughness, good vibration damping, economical for larger bores up to DN500, standard epoxy coating for corrosion protection
  • Limitations: unsuitable for aggressive chemicals, chloride-loaded brines or steam

2. Stainless Steel 1.4408 / CF8M (AISI 316) (RB106)

  • Application: chemical and pharmaceutical processing, food and beverage plants, seawater, potable water, hygiene-critical service
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C standard; higher on request with PTFE or Viton seats
  • Advantages: high corrosion resistance through molybdenum, hygienic surface, all wetted parts in 1.4408, no iron contamination of the medium
  • Limitations: higher material cost than GGG40; longer lead time on larger sizes

3. Ductile Iron GGG40.3 with PFA Lining (special design)

  • Application: concentrated acids, alkalis, halogens and dosing lines where metal contact must be avoided
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +200 °C
  • Advantages: near-universal chemical resistance, mechanical stability of the ductile iron body, complements the PFA-lined check valves range
  • Limitations: special order with surcharge; lining sensitive to abrasive solids

Ball and Coating Materials

1. Aluminium Ball NBR-Coated (RB105)

  • Application: wastewater, water supply, irrigation, cooling water — the standard ball of the GGG40 flanged series
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C
  • Advantages: lightweight ball rolls easily onto the seat, NBR coating dampens closure and reduces water hammer, abrasion-resistant against grit and fibres
  • Limitations: NBR is not ozone-resistant; unsuitable for oxidising chemicals

2. Steel Ball NBR-Coated (RB106)

  • Application: stainless steel series with BSP socket or DIN flange — chemical, food, pharma and hygienic water applications
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C
  • Advantages: high mass gives reliable closure at low back pressure, NBR coating ensures a tight metal-to-elastomer seal
  • Limitations: NBR limits the maximum operating temperature; not compatible with polar solvents and strong acids

3. PTFE Seat / Coating (on request)

  • Application: aggressive acids, alkalis, solvents and oxidising agents where NBR fails
  • Temperature: up to +150 °C
  • Advantages: near-universal chemical resistance, very low friction, FDA-compliant for food and pharmaceutical service
  • Limitations: higher price than NBR; needs precise seat pairing for a fully tight closure

4. FKM / Viton Seat / Coating (on request)

  • Application: hydrocarbons, mineral oils, aromatic solvents and elevated temperatures beyond the NBR window
  • Temperature: up to +180 °C
  • Advantages: high chemical and thermal resistance, ozone-resistant, long service life in petrochemical and oil-and-gas duty
  • Limitations: unsuitable for ketones, esters, hot water and steam

Fergo ball check valves comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. Flange drilling follows DIN EN 1092-2 PN16, face-to-face length follows EN 558-1 series 48, and threaded connections follow ISO 228/1. Versions with ANSI Class 150 flanges are available on request for inch-based pipework.

Inspection documents to EN 10204 — type 2.1 mill certificate, type 2.2 works certificate or type 3.1 inspection certificate — are supplied on request. A full overview of all certificates is published on the Fergo certificate page. For elastomer compatibility with your medium, please consult the Fergo resistance check before specifying NBR, PTFE or Viton seats.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock. Over 60 of them are ball check valves across the RB105 and RB106 series — in every common nominal size, body material and connection type. Orders are picked the same working day, so delivery follows within two to seven working days.

Fergo ships across Europe — including the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries and all other EU member states. Smaller threaded valves travel by parcel service, whereas large-bore flanged valves and consolidated shipments go by forwarding agent. Water-hammer protection at pump discharge lines can additionally be decoupled with rubber expansion joints. You will find shipping costs, payment options and express terms on the shipping and payment terms page.
