Non-Return Valves: Automatic Backflow Protection for Pipelines

A non-return valve — also called a check valve or non-return flap — opens on forward flow and closes as soon as the medium tries to reverse. Differential pressure alone lifts the disc, plate or ball off the seat. Consequently the valve needs no actuator, no control signal and no external energy. This protects pumps, compressors, meters and heat exchangers from water hammer, dry running and contamination.

Fergo supplies non-return valves from DN8 to DN600 and PN10 up to PN160, complemented by ANSI Class 125 through Class 900 for inch-based pipework. The programme includes the RV108 disc check valve in stainless steel with a metallic seat, the RV101 sleeve/threaded check valve with a Viton seat, the RB105 ball check valve in ductile iron GGG40 with an aluminium/NBR-coated ball and the RB106 ball check valve in stainless steel 1.4408 with socket connection. Face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1 series 48 and 49; flanges follow EN 1092-2 and ANSI B16.5.

Non-return valves serve water supply and treatment, wastewater, HVAC and irrigation, pump and compressor stations, oil and gas, chemical plants, fire protection, shipping and hydraulic systems. Where a spring return is added, the valve closes faster and works independently of installation position. Fitting a strainer upstream keeps particles away from the seat and extends service life.

01 Disc Check Valves (RV108)

The disc check valves sit between two counter-flanges as a wafer body and require no flanges of their own. The RV108 uses a stainless steel body (SS316/CF8M) with a metallic seat and a spring-loaded disc. Face-to-face length follows EN 558-1 series 49. Sizes span DN15 to DN200 at PN16, PN25, PN40 and ANSI Class 150, with a maximum operating pressure of 40 bar.

02 Sleeve Check Valves (RV101)

The sleeve check valves screw straight into the line through a female thread to ISO 228/1. The RV101 body, disc and spring are made from stainless steel 1.4301, paired with a Viton seat for a broad chemical range. Sizes run from DN15 to DN50 at 16 bar and up to +150 °C. This design suits building services, laboratory lines and instrumentation connections.

03 Gestra Check Valves

The Gestra check valves — including the RK 86/86A wafer disc valves — deliver metallic sealing up to 40 bar. Their stainless steel body and spring-loaded disc suit steam, condensate, thermal oil and demanding chemical service. Wafer bodies fit between flanges to EN 1092-1.

04 Lift Check Valves

The lift check valves carry the disc on a vertical stem inside the body. A spring or gravity closes the valve as soon as the flow stops. Flanged bodies come in stainless steel, ductile iron or cast steel. This design suits medium to high pressure lines from PN16 up to PN160.

05 Ball Check Valves (RB105, RB106)

The ball check valves close with a coated ball that rolls onto the seat. The RB105 uses a GGG40/EN-GJS-400-15 body with an aluminium/NBR-coated ball and flange connection to EN 1092-2. Face-to-face length follows EN 558-1 series 48 at PN16. The RB106, by contrast, uses a stainless steel 1.4408 body with a socket connection to BSP for smaller nominal sizes.

06 Axial Check Valves

The axial check valves close within milliseconds through a spring-loaded axial disc. As a result, the valve prevents water hammer even at high flow velocities. Nozzle designs additionally deliver a low pressure loss. Typical applications include pump discharge lines, boiler feed lines and district heating.

07 Foot Valves

The foot valves sit at the suction side of a pump and hold the priming water in the pipe. An integrated strainer basket keeps particles out. Brass, bronze and stainless steel bodies are standard. Foot valves are the classic backflow protection for well pumps, water tanks and instantaneous water heaters.

You can verify seat compatibility with your medium beforehand using the Fergo resistance check.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock. Around 500 of them are non-return valves across the seven design types — disc, sleeve, Gestra, lift, ball, axial and foot valves. All standard sizes, body materials and seat rings are available directly from stock. Orders are picked the same working day; delivery follows within two to seven working days.

Fergo ships across Europe — including the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries and all other EU member states. Smaller threaded and sleeve valves travel by parcel service, whereas large-bore flanged valves and consolidated shipments go by forwarding agent.
