Gate Valves: Tight Isolation for Straight-Through Pipelines

A gate valve isolates the flow with a wedge-shaped gate that lifts vertically out of the seat. In the open position, the bore matches the pipe diameter, so the medium passes with almost no pressure loss. As soon as the gate lowers onto the seat, the valve seals tightly. This design therefore suits isolation duty, not throttling — the correct throttling valve is the globe valve.

Fergo supplies gate valves in three material families. Ductile iron GGG40 handles municipal water supply and utility service, steel 1.0619 covers industrial and elevated-pressure pipework, and stainless steel 1.4408 (CF8M) is the choice for chemical, food and hygiene-critical applications. Nominal sizes reach DN300, with flange connections to DIN EN 1092-1 and face-to-face lengths to EN 558-1. Pressure ratings run from PN10 through PN40, complemented by ANSI Class 150 for inch-based pipework.

Gate valves serve drinking water networks, wastewater plants, heating and HVAC systems, chemical processing, food and beverage production, oil and gas as well as fire protection. Operators can specify a handwheel as standard or, on selected series, a pneumatic actuator, an electric actuator or a quick-closing lever. Actuator mounting follows ISO 5211. For a suitable AUMA actuator, Fergo delivers the fully mounted assembly on request.

01 Wedge Gate Valves for Drinking Water (DVGW)

The wedge gate valves form the core of the municipal water supply range. The ductile iron body EN-GJS-400-15 pairs with a rubberised EPDM-coated wedge that meets DVGW drinking water requirements. Flange connections follow EN 1092-2 PN10 and PN16. The soft-seated wedge closes bubble-tight even at low back pressure and needs no metallic seat. Nominal sizes cover DN50 up to DN300. Handwheel is standard; electric and pneumatic actuation is available on request.

02 Threaded Gate Valves

The threaded gate valves screw straight into the pipe through a female thread to ISO 228/1. The compact brass or stainless steel body suits heating circuits, HVAC installations, water lines and utility service at small bores. Sizes span DN15 to DN65. This design is the classic isolation valve behind pumps, meters and instruments in building services and light industry.

Body Materials

1. Ductile Iron GGG40 / EN-GJS-400-15

  • Application: municipal water supply, wastewater, cooling water, utility service, DVGW drinking water networks
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C · PN10 and PN16
  • Advantages: high toughness, good vibration damping, economical for large bores, epoxy coating for reliable corrosion protection
  • Limitations: unsuitable for aggressive chemicals, chloride-rich brines or steam service

2. Steel 1.0619 / ASTM A216 WCB

  • Application: industrial and elevated-pressure lines, oil and gas, refineries, power stations, steam and hot water systems
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C (seat dependent) · PN25 and PN40
  • Advantages: high mechanical strength, good weldability, proven with graphite gland packing at high temperatures
  • Limitations: not corrosion-resistant on its own; requires suitable media selection

3. Stainless Steel 1.4408 / CF8M (AISI 316) — VA450 series

  • Application: chemical and pharmaceutical processing, food and beverage plants, seawater, chloride-rich media, hygiene-critical service
  • Temperature: −25 °C to +180 °C (with PTFE-graphite packing) · PN16 and PN40
  • Advantages: high corrosion resistance through molybdenum, hygienic surface, both body and wedge in 1.4408, TA-Luft and AD2000 approved
  • Limitations: higher material cost, longer lead time on larger sizes

4. Brass CW617N (threaded series)

  • Application: drinking water, heating circuits, HVAC and sanitary installations at small bores
  • Temperature: −10 °C to +100 °C · PN16
  • Advantages: excellent machinability for threads, good corrosion resistance in water, compact and economical
  • Limitations: unsuitable for ammonia, aggressive chemicals and highly chloride-rich water

Wedge and Sealing Materials

1. Rubberised Wedge NBR-Coated

  • Application: industrial water, wastewater, oils and hydrocarbon-loaded media in the ductile iron series
  • Temperature: −20 °C to +80 °C
  • Advantages: excellent oil and grease resistance, elastic and bubble-tight, mechanically durable, economical
  • Limitations: not ozone-resistant, unsuitable for hot water above +80 °C or steam

2. Rubberised Wedge EPDM-Coated (DVGW)

  • Application: drinking water networks, hot water circuits, sanitary installations, dilute acids and alkalis
  • Temperature: −30 °C to +120 °C
  • Advantages: DVGW-tested and hygienically safe, excellent ozone and ageing resistance, wide temperature window
  • Limitations: not compatible with mineral oils, fats or hydrocarbons

3. Metallic Seat

  • Application: steam, thermal oil, industrial gases, abrasive media and any service beyond elastomer temperature limits
  • Temperature: up to +400 °C (alloy dependent)
  • Advantages: high durability, no ageing of the sealing element, proven in steel-bodied series for demanding conditions
  • Limitations: lower leak-tightness than a soft-seated wedge; higher opening torque

4. Stem Sealing: PTFE-Graphite Packing (TA-Luft)

  • Application: stem passage sealing on all VA450 stainless and steel gate valves
  • Temperature: PTFE content up to +200 °C, graphite content up to +400 °C
  • Advantages: meets TA-Luft emission limits, adjustable and long-lasting, chemically resistant
  • Limitations: requires periodic retightening; not a hermetic barrier like a bellows seal

Fergo gate valves comply with the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU and carry the CE mark. The soft-seated drinking water series holds DVGW approval to DIN EN 1074-2, and stainless steel VA450 versions additionally carry TA-Luft approval for emission-relevant service plus AD2000-A4 for German pressure vessel codes. Flange connections follow DIN EN 1092-1 and EN 1092-2, face-to-face lengths follow EN 558-1, and actuator mounting follows an ISO 5211 flange.

Inspection documents to EN 10204 — type 2.2 works certificate or type 3.1 inspection certificate — are available on request. A full overview of all certificates is published on the Fergo certificate page. For safety-critical installations, DVGW-approved butterfly valves complement the gate valve range. You can verify wedge and seal compatibility with your medium beforehand using the Fergo resistance check.

Fergo holds more than 25,000 industrial valves in stock. The gate valve range covers wedge gate valves for drinking water, threaded gate valves for building services and stainless steel VA450 gate valves for chemical and process duty — in every common nominal size and body material. Orders are picked the same working day, so delivery follows within two to seven working days.

Fergo ships across Europe — including the United Kingdom, the Nordic countries and all other EU member states. Smaller threaded valves travel by parcel service, whereas large-bore flanged valves and consolidated shipments go by forwarding agent. You will find shipping costs, payment options and express terms on the shipping and payment terms page.
